山海经 (Shan Hai Jing)"The Classic of Mountains and Seas” is an ancient Chinese text from the pre-Qin period, a compilation of fantastical and mythical geography filled with bizarre and extravagant tales.

In the ancient categorisation system, it is considered as a historical geographical record, also as a collection of fables of miscellaneous works.

The diverse and surreal scenes in the text featuring pieced-together exotic creatures, reflect the early development of Chinese civilisation in the Huaxia region during the pre-Qin and Northern and Southern Dynasties periods.

Many myths preserved in this text capture the romantic experiences of human civilisation during its childhood, echoing the memories of primitive humanity. The term 'romantic' is used here to convey the chaotic yet magnificent nature, where time and space converge and intertwine like a dream.

This intertwining of fantastical elements is influenced by early Eastern philosophy, exemplified by the philosophical discourse between Zhuangzi and Hui Shi, particularly the argument of "how can one know the happiness of a fish when one is not a fish?". Zhuangzi's theory unfolds gradually, emphasising the unity with the universe, oneness with all things, equality of size, and transcending distinctions of right and wrong, encouraging a liberated and wandering mind.

"One & Only? 和合而生”. Through a fusion of group contemporary dance, projection, sculpture, and installation art, this piece seeks to mirror and advocate a resonance with the modern era, capturing the essence of the present moment. The focal point lies in Zhuangzi's "holistic perspective”. In our contemporary society, we grapple with the constraints of livelihood, emotions, societal norms, and even the persisting pursuit of freedom, equality, and perfection, often ensnared in the labyrinth of the "self/individual". What, then, defines a collective whole? Can we embody, as Zhuangzi suggests, the jubilant fish, or the stellar breeze from a star ten light-years away?

Am I, also a part of you?
